I was driving back from a weekend with family, and I couldn’t shake a thought from my mind. We’d just watched a youth basketball game, and while the team played hard, one of the girls barely got off the bench. Her disappointment was written all over her face.
Now, let me be clear: I don’t dislike organized team sports. They can be fantastic for kids and adults alike. But moments like this remind me of a bigger issue—one I see often as a coach.
Team sports don’t always encourage growth.
Here’s why.
When winning becomes the priority, only the “best” players get real time on the court or field. That leaves kids who are still learning—those who need the reps—the ones sitting out. And without those opportunities, how do they improve?
As a coach, I believe youth sports should be about skill development: learning how to move, control your body, and build confidence. But too often, the scoreboard overshadows the process.
At Well Street Fitness, that’s exactly what we provide. Every child participates, every child is challenged, and every child gets the chance to shine.
This is the beauty of fitness outside traditional team sports: growth isn’t limited by playing time. Every rep, every class, every challenge is an opportunity to get better.
So, should kids play team sports? Absolutely. But I encourage parents to also show them another side of athletics—one where success isn’t defined by wins and losses, but by effort, growth, and community.
That’s what we’re building here at Well Street Fitness. Join us In our Athletic Performance Classes HERE
