I hear this one all the time.
"I don't want to start working out. I'm afraid I'm going to get hurt."
I get it. Weights look heavy. The gym looks intimidating. You've seen people get injured and you don't want to be that person.
But here's the part nobody talks about.
Not training is what's actually hurting you.
There is no middle ground.
Every year you don't train, your muscles shrink a little. Your tendons get a little less elastic. Your bones lose density. Your joints lose the support system around them.
You don't feel it happening. Until one day you do.
I had someone tell me this story not long ago. They hadn't worked out in 20 or 30 years. Just living their life. Nothing dramatic.
Then one day they were walking up a hill near their house.
Normal day. Normal pace. No gym involved.
They blew out their knee.
Not from lifting. Not from training. From walking up a hill.
That's what happens when the muscles and tendons around your joints get weak enough. Everyday movements become the injury.
I tore my ACL playing sports.
One of the worst knee injuries you can have. A lot of people come back at 70 or 80 percent and stay there. They guard it. They avoid certain movements. They live a little smaller.
I came back stronger.
Not because I got lucky. Because I trained the right way. Built the muscles around that knee back up. Didn't let the injury become a permanent ceiling.
The training didn't hurt me. The training healed me.
Deb is in her 60s.
She had a knee replacement and came to WSF to train.
Most people in that situation think it's over. That the surgery is the end of doing anything serious with their body.
Deb thought the opposite.
She's been training 1-on-1 with me twice a week for a few months now.
Every single week she gets a little stronger than the week before.
Not because she's some exception. Because she showed up, trusted the process, and let a professional build her back up the right way.
Here's where I want to be straight with you.
You can get hurt at the gym.
If you walk in without knowing what you're doing, you will lift with bad mechanics. You will load movements your body is not ready for. You will compensate with the wrong muscles and eventually something gives.
But that is not a training problem. That is a coaching problem.
The gym is not dangerous. Doing it alone, without someone who knows how to build you up correctly, that is where people get hurt.
Every coach at Well Street Fitness is a trained professional. We do not guess. We start by learning where you are and what your body can handle right now. We build from there. Slow enough to do it right. Fast enough to make real progress.
If you have been thinking about starting, or you know someone who has, come train with us for free.
August 7th and 8th we are running a free bring-a-friend event at WSF.
Bring someone you know. Train together. No commitment, no pressure.
Just come and see what training the right way actually feels like.
Book your spot at wellstreetfitness.com/schedule and click the class labeled Free Friend Event. Pick the time that works for you.
The injury you are afraid of getting at the gym is already coming for you if you are not training.
Weak muscles. Weak tendons. Weak bones.
That is just how the body works when you stop using it.
The question is not whether you should train. It is whether you are going to do it with someone who knows what they are doing.
We are here when you are ready.
