Last week I talked about why athletes need to keep training through the fall season and why practice alone isn't enough to maintain the strength and power they built over the summer.
A lot of parents reached out asking the same question.
"Okay. But what does this actually look like? What do we do first?"
That's exactly what I want to answer today.
If you're thinking about getting your athlete started at WSF, whether it's for in-season training, off-season development, or just building a foundation for the first time, here's the full picture of what to expect.
Every athlete who trains at Well Street Fitness starts with a performance evaluation.
I want to be clear about something right away: this is not a tryout. Your athlete doesn't have to be fast, strong, or experienced to walk in the door. This is a baseline assessment. Nothing more, nothing less.
What it does is give me the data I need to build a program that's actually built for your athlete. Not a generic template. Not a one-size-fits-all plan. A program designed around where they are right now, what their sport demands, and where they need to grow the most.
We test 7 performance markers:
After the evaluation, I sit down with the athlete and the parent and walk through everything. You'll leave with a clear picture of where your athlete stands, what we're going to focus on first, and what success looks like over the next 90 days.
All results go into TrainHeroic, your athlete's personal training app. We retest every 12 weeks so the progress is always measurable.
Before any new athlete moves into semi-private training, they complete our OnRamp program.
This is mandatory for every athlete who hasn't trained with us before. It exists for one reason: to guarantee their success and make sure they don't get injured.
A lot of athletes show up having never been coached on the basics. They've played sports. They've run sprints. But they haven't been taught how to move. The OnRamp fixes that.
Over 6 individual sessions with me, your athlete learns:
The 5 Points of Movement Success. These are the fundamentals that every elite athlete's mechanics are built on. Toes Up, Arm Action, Arm and Leg Relationship, Landing/Base Position, and Deceleration Position. These aren't drills they run through once. They're the foundation everything else is built on.
Strength and movement foundations. Squats, hinges, single-leg work, upper body patterns. Done right, with proper form, so they're building real strength instead of reinforcing bad habits.
The 3-Day Speed System. Every session follows one of three speed focuses: multi-directional speed, acceleration, or top speed. Your athlete doesn't just do speed work. They learn each phase of speed in sequence and understand why each one matters.
Injury prevention and recovery. Targeted work to protect the areas of the body that are most vulnerable in their specific sport, plus education on how to manage soreness, optimize rest, and build recovery habits.
Nutrition. Your athlete leaves with our 31-page WSF Sports Nutrition Guide and walks out of the first session with MyFitnessPal set up and ready to go. We cover fueling for training, protein and calorie targets, and the daily habits that support performance.
At the end of the OnRamp, we review everything together. Results, progress, and next steps. 95% of our athletes move directly into semi-private training from there.
The OnRamp is designed to be completed in 3 weeks.
This is where athletes truly accelerate.
Semi-private is exactly what it sounds like. A small group environment with a high level of individual attention. Max 3 athletes per session. One coach.
But here's the key: every athlete in the session has their own program.
I'm not running the group through the same workout. Each athlete is following a plan I built specifically for them, based on their evaluation results, their sport, their strengths, and the areas they need to develop most. The programs are updated and progressed over time so your athlete is always working toward something specific.
The group structure is intentional. There's real energy when you're training alongside other motivated athletes. It creates accountability, competition, and the kind of environment where athletes push harder than they would on their own.
It's also more accessible than 1-on-1 training. Lower cost, but with nearly the same level of personalized coaching.
For in-season athletes, the program is structured around the demands of their competitive schedule. We don't add more stress to an already full plate. We manage the training load so your athlete stays strong and explosive throughout the season, not just in August.
A quick note on group classes: we don't run group classes at WSF. And honestly, that's intentional. Your athlete already does group stuff at school. They practice with their team. They run conditioning with their teammates. What they need isn't more of the same. It's a program built specifically for them. Semi-private gives them the energy and accountability of training with other athletes while keeping their program completely individualized.
Cooper Kind came through our OnRamp earlier this summer going into his sophomore year of high school.
He went through all 6 sessions, built the foundation, and earned his way into semi-private. Now he's training pre-season alongside his brother and making gains.
That's the progression. OnRamp first, then semi-private. One builds on the other.
By the time Cooper's season starts, he won't be starting from zero like a lot of athletes do every fall. He'll be stronger, faster, and further ahead than he was when school let out.
This program is for youth athletes ages 13 and up who want to get faster, stronger, and more competitive. And who want a clear, measurable plan to get there.
It doesn't matter if they've never trained before. The OnRamp exists specifically for that athlete. It doesn't matter if they're in the middle of a season. We build around it.
What matters is that they're willing to show up and do the work.
The first step is simple: book a free No Sweat Intro.
We'll sit down, talk about your athlete, where they are, what they play, and what they're working toward. From there, we schedule the evaluation and build the plan.
No commitment required. No pressure. Just a conversation.
